So’ham – I Am That
So’ham
So = That (Brahman / the Infinite); Ham = I (Aham / the individual self). Coordinated with the breath, So’ham is the natural declaration of the non-dual identity of the individual Atman with the universal Brahman — I am That.
So’ham belongs to the mahavakya lineage of the Upanishads — it is of the same order as Aham Brahmasmi (Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.4.10) and Tat Tvam Asi (Chandogya Upanishad 6.8.7). Where the yogic So’ham practice uses breath as a calming tool, this register holds the mantra as a declaration of non-dual identity: the inhale (So) is the recognition of Brahman, the exhale (Ham) is the merging of the individual self back into That — every breath already a continual act of Atma-vichara, the inquiry into the nature of the Self.
