About This Practice
Sit quietly and practice sustained observation of thoughts, sensations, and emotions from the position of the unchanging inner witness.
Sakshi bhava — the stance of the witness — is central to Vedantic meditation as taught in the Kena Upanishad: ‘That which is not thought by the mind but by which the mind thinks — know that alone as Brahman.’ The Mandukya Upanishad confirms that the Atman is the unmoving witness of all three states (waking, dreaming, deep sleep). In this practice, the meditator learns to occupy the witnessing position — not to suppress experience but to recognise the awareness that precedes and holds all experience, undisturbed.

How to Practice
- Sit comfortably with the spine upright; close your eyes.
- Take three slow breaths to settle the body.
- Allow thoughts, sensations, and feelings to arise — make no effort to stop them.
- Notice: there is something in you that is aware of these arising things.
- Rest your attention in that awareness itself — not in the content, but in the one who sees.
- When attention wanders into thought, gently return to the posture of the witness.
- After 5–8 minutes, take a slow breath and open your eyes.
✦
Benefits
- Stable inner ground beneath emotional turbulence
- Reduced identification with passing thoughts and feelings
- Direct acquaintance with the witnessing Self
- Growing ease with whatever arises in the mind
