"Today, I offer my undertaking, not just my wish for ease."

The Sankalp

I bring what I am beginning to Ganesha — not to be spared its difficulty, but to have it weighed by the one who is lord of obstacles, not only their remover.

Ganesha carries two names usually taught as one: Vighnaharta, who removes obstacles, and Vighnakarta, who places them. Tradition holds both — the Mudgala Purana names an avatara of his, Vighnaraja, whose very function is to preserve by governing what may proceed. Read this way, an obstacle is not treated as an enemy of the path but as something the path itself may need. Praying to Ganesha, in this understanding, is less a request to be spared difficulty and more a submission of the undertaking to his judgment about whether — and how — it should proceed.

  1. Before beginning something today, name it honestly to Ganesha — including the parts you're unsure about.
  2. If something meets resistance today, ask what the obstacle might be asking of you, before asking how to remove it.
  3. Notice any undertaking that keeps meeting resistance — sit with it rather than force it.
  4. Offer the outcome, not just the wish, into his hands.
  • A steadier relationship with setbacks
  • Less urgency to force what isn't ready
  • A more honest starting point for new undertakings
  • Room to reconsider, not only to persevere
