"Interrupt The Chain"

Daily Sankalp · Mitra v3.0 Stub · Beginner
The Sankalp

When I feel a reactive chain beginning, I interrupt it before it gathers force.

Indriya-nigraha is the capacity to intervene in one's own reactivity, and Pratipaksha-bhavana — the cultivation of an opposing mental quality — is the specific method the Yoga Sutras prescribe for this. When a harmful inner chain begins — irritation building toward anger, craving building toward indulgence — interrupting it at the earliest stage costs far less than containing it after it has gained momentum.

✦
  1. Find the link in the chain of habit where you can insert a pause.
  2. The chain of reaction has a weak link — that is where to interrupt.
  3. You do not have to stop the whole chain; just break it once.
  • Pattern interruption
  • Inner authority
  • Freedom from habit
